Who are we?

The MSU Society of Women in Space Exploration is just one chapter of a large national organization who's goal is to encourage women and diversity on various fields of space exploration.

It is no secret that STEM is a male-dominated world. Our goal is to change that! Many women absolutely love science from a young age - but fall out of pursuing it over the various unfortunate circumstances that come with being a female in a man’s world. It is discouraging to not have a female role model to look up to and it creates an endless cycle of women who fear science. When women have a support system and a strong network, we thrive. That is why we exist!

SWISE empowers students to become leaders at MSU by creating a space for women, allies, and other minority groups who share a common interest- space and diversity in STEM!

What do we do?

Meetings

Meetings are held bi-weekly. Most meetings feature guest speakers, research spotlights, workshops in career development, or fun activity nights to get to know other women in STEM.

Conferences

Networking is a great way to further your career in STEM. SWISE attends various Michigan-based conferences including, but not limited to, the UofM Women in Aeronautics and Astronautics (WAA) Conference, and the national Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP). These conferences provide plenty of networking and learning opportunities.

Guest Speakers

SWISE offers many opportunities to hear from guest speakers. In the past we have hosted many MSU professors and grad-students, as well as representatives from NASA and other space related industries.

Special Social Events

There are several social events throughout the year to get involved in such as trips to MSU's Abrams Planetarium, the Air and Space Museum in Kalamazoo Michigan, and even group trips to the MSU Dairy Store.

We also participate in several MSU events that introduce young girls to a variety of STEM fields
